Ruine Balm
Balm bei Günsberg, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Balm is Switzerland's only cave castle ruin, uniquely carved into a rocky overhang in the Jura Mountains near Balm bei Günsberg in the canton of Solothurn.
Built around the mid-11th century by the Lords of Balm as a fortified dwelling with thick outer walls up to 2.4 meters and a wooden interior structure, it served briefly as their seat before they relocated to Altbüron, later passing through noble hands until abandonment by the mid-15th century.
Excavated and secured in 1939-1941, this rare grotto stronghold of national heritage significance now welcomes hikers via a steep path to explore its remnants, including a later wehrhaus and prehistoric settlement traces dating back to the Azilian period.
