Ruine Freienstein
Freienstein-Teufen, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Freienstein is a 13th-century medieval castle ruin perched high above Freienstein-Teufen village in Switzerland's canton of Zurich, built around 1250 by the Barons of Tengen and first documented in 1254.
Originally a tower house with curtain walls, a deep sod well, and stables, it was held by the von Hasli (later von Freienstein) family before changing hands amid conflicts, including destruction by Zurich forces in 1334 and a fiery raid in 1443 linked to robber baron legends.
Donated to the canton in 1975 and conserved in 1976, the site preserves its tower and offers hikers panoramic views while revealing archaeological insights into regional nobility and a tragic tale of a forgotten prisoner.
