Ruine Gilgenberg
Zullwil, Switzerland
Ruine Gilgenberg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin overlooking the village of Zullwil in the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland, first mentioned in 1312 and founded by the Lords of Ramstein as a strategic outpost.
It controlled nearby territories including Zullwil, Fehren, Meltingen, and Nunningen until Solothurn purchased the lordship in 1527, after which it served administrative roles until its destruction by fire in 1798 during the Helvetic Revolution by angry locals who looted the stones.
Today, the remnants offer hikers access to scenic Jura views, with annual medieval festivals at its base featuring markets, crafts, and reenactments.
