Ruine Nünegg Lieli
Lieli, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Nünegg Lieli, also known as Burgruine Nünegg, is one of the largest castle ruins in canton Lucerne, Switzerland, located in the municipality of Lieli near Hohenrain.
Built in a single phase around the late 13th century by the Lords of Lieli, who served the Kyburg family and were first documented in 1223, it functioned as their ancestral seat with later expansions before the family's extinction in the early 14th century.
The fortress changed hands multiple times until it burned down around 1386 amid the turmoil of the Battle of Sempach, later passing to Lucerne ownership by 1700 alongside Schloss Heidegg, with comprehensive restorations from 2014-2016 securing its walls and features under federal and cantonal protection.
Freely accessible to visitors anytime, the hilltop site offers an observation platform with stunning Seetal valley views, information panels on medieval life, recreated ancient fields, wild orchards, a grill area, and toilet facilities ideal for hikers.
