Ruine Radegg
Wilchingen, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Radegg is a medieval spur castle ruin located high above the Wangental valley near Wilchingen in Switzerland's canton of Schaffhausen, constructed around 1200 by the Lords of Radegg, first mentioned in records as early as 1188.
The fortress featured massive walls up to four meters thick on its eastern attack sides, a central courtyard with a cistern, and two towers, serving as a strategic outpost possibly linked to the nearby Rheinau Abbey before its sudden destruction by fire shortly after 1300, evidenced by reddened stones and arrowheads found during 1923-1937 excavations.
Today, the accessible remnants at 560 meters elevation offer hikers panoramic views, a picnic area with benches and fireplace, and local legends of a robber baron and his daughter Kätterli, who haunts the site waiting for a pure-hearted suitor to bring her a blue-flowering rose.
