Ruine Ringgenberg
Ringgenberg, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Ringgenberg is a 13th-century medieval castle ruin on a rocky outcrop above Lake Brienz in the village of Ringgenberg, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, first fortified in the Late Bronze Age and built around 1230 by Imperial governor Cuno von Brienz.
Home to the Counts of Ringgenberg who expanded their influence against Interlaken Monastery, it was burned by Uri troops in 1381, passed to Bern in 1386, and changed hands repeatedly before abandonment, with parts sold to the monastery.
A 1670 Baroque church by Abraham Dunz incorporates castle walls and a tower into its structure, while the ruins restored in 1928, 1946-49, and 2006-08 offer panoramic lake views via an accessible tower terrace, listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
