Ruine Schloss Neu-Falkenstein
Balsthal, Switzerland
Ruine Schloss Neu-Falkenstein is a well-preserved medieval castle ruin located near Balsthal in the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland, with origins dating back to the early 12th century as a stronghold for local noble families like the Barons von Bechburg and later the Counts of Falkenstein.
The site suffered major damage in the 1356 Basel earthquake, requiring extensive repairs, and gained notoriety during the 1374 Saffron War when owner Henmann von Bechburg raided a merchant convoy, leading to a 14-week siege, partial destruction, and the execution of its defenders.
It served as a seat of Solothurn's provincial governor until 1798, when it was burned during the Helvetic Revolution, after which conservation efforts began in the early 20th century to stabilize features like its round bergfried tower and defensive walls, now offering hikers panoramic Jura views.
