Ruine Weissenburg
Oberwil im Simmental, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Weissenburg is a 13th-century castle ruin overlooking Oberwil im Simmental in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland, first documented in 1278 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Weissenburg who controlled parts of the Simmen Valley.
The fortress, built amid dramatic mountain terrain, passed to Bern in 1439 after the family's holdings were acquired, eventually falling into decay while nearby thermal springs at Bad Weissenburg drew nobility for curative baths from the 17th century until the mid-20th.
Today, scant remnants like wall foundations mark the site as a heritage spot accessible via hiking trails, distinct from the restored spa ruins below that highlight the area's lost bathing culture.
