Rumeli Fortress
Istanbul, Türkiye, Turkey
Rumeli Fortress, known as Rumelihisarı, is a massive 15th-century Ottoman fortress on Istanbul's European Bosphorus shore, constructed in just four months from 1451-1452 under Sultan Mehmed II to blockade sea access before the 1453 conquest of Constantinople.
Built opposite Anadolu Hisarı with three grand towers named after key viziers, it features thick walls, gates, and ramparts designed by architect Muslihiddin, housing up to 700 soldiers and massive cannons to control maritime traffic.
Now an open-air museum with panoramic strait views, restored courtyards, and summer concerts, it symbolizes Ottoman engineering prowess amid wooded hills.
