Saint-Maurice Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Saint-Maurice Castle is a medieval fortress in the municipality of Saint-Maurice, canton of Valais, Switzerland, built starting in 1476 by Bern to control the narrow Rhone valley entrance.
Expanded until 1646 but damaged by a 1693 fire that destroyed its gunpowder stores, it was rebuilt and later served as a governor's seat, customs post, orphanage, military school, and prison. Now a Swiss heritage site of national significance, it hosts exhibitions on art, comics, and military history while overlooking the strategic gorge.
