The Saladin Citadel, also known as Qal'at Salah ad-Din, in Syria is a massive medieval fortress built by the Ayyubid ruler Saladin between 1176 and 1183 to protect the city of Lattakia and control the surrounding region.
Located on a rocky spur with steep cliffs and a deep ditch, it covers over 5 hectares and stretches 740 meters in length, featuring Byzantine, Crusader, Ayyubid, and Mamluk architectural influences.
The citadel includes a large palatial complex with baths, reception rooms, a mosque, minaret, and extensive defensive walls and towers. Throughout its history, it served as a vital military stronghold, witnessing multiple battles and changes in control, and today remains an important cultural and historic landmark recognized by UNESCO as part of Syria's heritage.
