Santa Maria in Calanca
Switzerland, Switzerland
Santa Maria in Calanca is a historic village in the Moesa Region of Graubünden canton, Switzerland, renowned for its medieval castle tower (Torre di Sta. Maria) and the adjacent Church of the Assumption of St. Mary (S. Maria Assunta), both Swiss heritage sites of national significance.
The church, first mentioned in 1219, served as the mother parish for the entire Calanca Valley, featuring a Gothic bell tower, Renaissance painted ceiling from 1606, and a Baroque portico with statues, while its original high altar by Ivo Strigel now resides in Basel's Historical Museum.
The pentagonal donjon castle, built around the late 13th century by the Counts of Sax-Misox with unusual French-influenced design including thick walls up to 4 meters and integrated living quarters, acted as the valley's political center before abandonment by the 15th century and later restorations in the 20th.
