Schloss Binningen
Binningen, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Binningen is a historic moated castle in the heart of Binningen municipality near Basel in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, first documented in 1299 and likely constructed in the late 13th century by Basel burgher Heinrich von Zaeise.
Damaged by the 1356 Basel earthquake and fires in 1409 and 1444 during conflicts with Habsburg forces, it was rebuilt and transformed into a Baroque residence by patrician families like the Griebs and Eschers, later sheltering Anabaptist leader David Joris under alias in the 1540s.
Now operating as a restaurant and hotel since major 2008 renovations in a scenic public park, the castle retains its white facade, red sandstone accents, round tower, and cultural significance as a Swiss heritage site.
