Schloss Bischofszell
Bischofszell, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Bischofszell is a medieval castle in Bischofszell, Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, constructed in the 12th or 13th century as the residence and administrative center for the bishops of Constance on a steep, naturally defended hill overlooking the town.
Damaged by a major city fire in 1419, it was promptly repaired and continued serving as an episcopal stronghold until the Swiss Confederation conquered Thurgau in 1460, after which it functioned as a bailiwick seat for local governance.
Today, the ruins form part of the town's historic fabric, contributing to Bischofszell's status in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites alongside landmarks like the Rathaus and old bridges, though the castle itself is no longer habitable and reflects its role in the region's feudal and early confederate history.
