Schloss Blatten
Oberriet, Switzerland
Schloss Blatten, also known as Burgruine Blatten, is a medieval castle ruin serving as the landmark of Oberriet in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, first mentioned in 1277 and built around 1230-1270 by Abbot Berchthold von Falkenstein to defend against the counts of Montfort.
It functioned as an abbatial seat until 1798, suffered damage in 1799 during Austrian-French conflicts at the Blatten ferry, and was acquired by the canton of St. Gallen in 1803, with its 23-meter tower preserved alongside ring walls and a vaulted cellar after renovations in 1911, 1976, 1985, and 2016.
Perched on Blattenberg amid forests, it offers panoramic Rhine Valley views, a free grill area, and access via a short hike or Vita-Parcours trail ideal for families and nature lovers.
