Schloss Habsburg
Habsburg, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Habsburg is the ancestral seat of the Habsburg dynasty in Habsburg, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland, built around 1020-1030 by Count Radbot of Klettgau and Bishop Werner of Strasbourg as a double castle on the Wülpelsberg hill overlooking the Aare River valley.
Named possibly after a hawk sighted there or a nearby ford, it served as the family's residence and administrative center until the 13th century when they shifted power to Austria, leading to its decline after passing to vassals and later Bernese control in 1415 following Swiss Confederate expansion.
Today, managed by Museum Aargau since 2009, the well-preserved rear castle with its towers, chapel, and one of Switzerland's deepest medieval wells at 68.5 meters hosts exhibitions, a restaurant, and panoramic views, while the front castle lies in ruins as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
