Verified Schloss Hallwyl

Seengen, Switzerland, Switzerland

Schloss Hallwyl is one of Switzerland's most significant moated castles, situated on two artificial islands in the Aabach River near Seengen in the canton of Aargau, just north of Lake Hallwil.

First documented in 1256 with origins in the late 12th century as a residential tower built by the Lords of Hallwyl, it expanded into a fortified complex with a moat, palas, bergfried, and defensive walls by the 14th century, surviving fires, wars like the 1415 Swiss conquest, and renovations through Gothic, Renaissance, and neo-Gothic phases.

Donated to the public in 1925 by the Hallwyl family foundation and owned by Aargau canton since 1994, it now operates as a museum showcasing 700 years of noble life, medieval artifacts, and regional history, accessible via guided tours amid scenic wetlands.
