Schloss Laupen
Laupen, Switzerland
Schloss Laupen is an ancient medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop in the small town of Laupen in Switzerland's Canton of Bern, strategically positioned at the confluence of the Sense and Saane rivers.
Dating back to around 930 under Burgundian King Rudolf II or possibly the 10th-12th centuries, it changed hands among nobles like the Kyburgs, Habsburgs, and Savoyards before Bern acquired it in 1324, enduring a major siege in the 1339 Battle of Laupen against a coalition led by Fribourg.
Featuring a well-preserved Knights' Hall from circa 1315, late Gothic additions, a Käfigturm prison tower, and panoramic bastions, it now serves as a museum and event venue run by a foundation since 2012, classified as a Swiss heritage site of national significance amid the town's intact old center.
