Schloss Oberberg
Gossau, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Oberberg is a medieval castle perched on a hill above Gossau in Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, first documented in 1262 as a fortified residence of the lords of Oberberg who served as ministeriales for St. Gallen Abbey.
It withstood attacks during the Appenzell Wars in 1406, was rebuilt and expanded in the 16th century under Abbot Diethelm Blarer into its current form with a stone residential wing atop the original tower, and functioned as the seat of abbatial bailiffs administering the Oberberg district until 1798.
After passing through private hands as a cheese factory, embroidery workshop, and inn, it was acquired by a local cooperative in 1924, protected as a national heritage site in 1927, suffered a major fire in 1955, and was meticulously restored to house a castle museum, restaurant, wedding venue, and chapel in historic rooms like the torture chamber and courtroom.
