Schloss Rapperswil
Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Rapperswil is a striking medieval castle overlooking Lake Zurich in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland, built around 1220-1230 by Count Rudolf II von Rapperswil to control key trade routes and the narrow lake passage.
Destroyed in 1350 during conflicts with Zurich but swiftly rebuilt by Habsburg Duke Albrecht II, it later served as a Swiss Confederation administrative center and prison until 1798, passing to local citizens after the Habsburg-Laufenburg line's extinction in 1442.
Today, the triangular fortress with its prominent towers houses the Polish National Museum, established in 1870 by exiled Count Władysław Broel-Plater, alongside a deer park and panoramic views, standing as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
