Schloss Schadau & Schadau-Park
Thun, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Schadau is a romantic 19th-century Gothic Revival castle on the southern shore of Lake Thun in Thun, Switzerland, built between 1846 and 1854 by Neuchâtel banker Abraham Denis Alfred de Rougemont as a summer residence on the site of an earlier 17th-century manor house first documented in 1348.
Designed by architects Pierre-Charles Dusillon and James Victor Collin in an Anglo-Gallic style with neo-Gothic elements, Renaissance details, and innovative features like air ducts for fireplaces, it is surrounded by an English-style park in the Schadaupark featuring panoramic views of the lake, mountains, and Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau peaks.
Owned by the city of Thun since 1925 after a referendum prevented demolition, the castle was renovated extensively from 2017-2019 and now operates as a boutique hotel, restaurant, and event venue housing the Swiss Gastronomy Museum, recognized as a heritage site of national significance.
