Schloss Steinegg
Hüttwilen, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Steinegg is a 13th-century castle in Hüttwilen, Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, first documented in 1357 as the seat of the Barons of Steinegg and later owned by ministerial families like the von Ramstein before passing to Zurich in 1583, serving as the residence of Zurich bailiffs until 1798.
Rebuilt after fires around 1520 and expanded with a southeast wing and tower in 1624-1626, it was transformed into a neo-Renaissance-style manor in 1886-1887 by Alfred Ziegler, who ran an agricultural estate there, followed by uses as a health clinic and hotel until financial troubles led to its private acquisition in 2006 for ongoing restoration.
Classified as a category B cultural property of regional significance, the castle overlooks the Hüttwilersee amid forested heights, embodying Thurgau's noble and administrative heritage though access remains limited during renovations.
