Schloss Thorberg
Krauchthal, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Thorberg is a historic castle in the municipality of Krauchthal in Switzerland's canton of Bern, originally built in the 12th century as a noble residence for the Lords of Thorberg.
After the family's extinction in 1397, it was bequeathed to the Carthusian order, who converted it into a monastery with surviving elements like a 1510s chapel featuring Adoration frescoes.
Secularized during the 1528 Reformation, it served Bernese administrators, later as an almshouse, reformatory, and prison since 1893, known as Switzerland's "Alcatraz" for high-security inmates, while preserving its Baroque structure as a cultural heritage site.
