Schloss Werdenberg
Werdenberg, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schloss Werdenberg is a well-preserved medieval castle in Werdenberg, Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, built around 1228 by Count Rudolf I of Montfort as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Werdenberg, overlooking the historic wooden town that developed below it.
It changed hands multiple times through noble families like Sax-Misox, Hewen, and Glarus bailiffs after 1517, suffering a major fire in 1695 but being swiftly rebuilt, before passing to the Hilty family in 1835 as a private residence.
Today, as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, it houses a museum depicting 800 years of local history across its tower, palace, and halls, paired with the nearby Schlangenhaus museum in the town, offering cultural events and a glimpse into feudal, administrative, and bourgeois eras.
