Schnabelburg Castle
Hausen am Albis, Switzerland, Switzerland
Schnabelburg Castle is a medieval ruin perched on the Albis hills above Hausen am Albis in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, first mentioned in records around 1185.
Constructed around 1150 by the Lords of Eschenbach to guard the vital trade route between Zurich and Lucerne, it featured a compact design with a bergfried keep and defensive walls.
The castle met its end in 1309 when Habsburg forces razed it in retaliation for Walter von Eschenbach's role in the assassination of King Albert I, leaving only foundation walls and offering hikers today a scenic viewpoint over the Sihl Valley.
