Schwarzenstein Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Schwarzenstein Castle is a ruined hill castle in the municipality of Obersaxen Mundaun, Graubünden canton, Switzerland, built around 1250 on a narrow rocky ridge at 1,173 meters above sea level between St. Joseph and Tavanasa villages.
Likely constructed by the Freiherren von Rhäzüns to control the Obersaxen plateau along the Rhine, it featured an oval ring wall, two main buildings separated by a courtyard, a multi-story gatehouse, and defensive elements like a high entrance, serving as home to appointed vogts until abandonment.
The well-preserved remnants, including standing wall sections and foundations, hold Swiss cultural heritage status and are reachable by hiking trails offering views of the Vorderrhein valley.
