Sigiriya
Matale District, Central Province, Sri Lanka
Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress in Matale District, Central Province, Sri Lanka, built in the late 5th century CE atop a massive, steep-sided monolith that rises about 200 meters above the surrounding plains.
It was constructed as a royal capital and palace by King Kashyapa I, who carved terraces, stairways, water gardens, and a fortified summit complex on the rock, giving it both military and ceremonial importance. The site is famous for its well‑preserved landscaped gardens at the base, colorful frescoes of celestial nymphs on a sheltered rock gallery, and the remains of a huge lion‑shaped entrance that gave the hill its name, meaning “Lion Rock”.
After the kingdom fell, Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery and pilgrimage place, and today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site visited by thousands of tourists each year for its dramatic views, history, and mix of architecture, irrigation engineering, and art.
