Silifke Kalesi
Turkey, Turkey
Silifke Kalesi is a medieval fortress dominating a hilltop in Silifke, Mersin Province, southern Turkey, overlooking the Göksu River valley and plains.
Built by the Byzantines in the late 7th century to counter Arab invasions, it later passed to the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia under King Leo II in the 1180s and the Knights Hospitaller in 1210 before Crusader, Seljuk, and Ottoman control.
The oval-shaped citadel spans 250 by 75 meters with a dry moat, 10 surviving towers, vaulted undercrofts, and ashlar walls, recently yielding Byzantine talismanic artifacts during excavations.
