Simena Castle
Turkey, Turkey
Simena Castle, perched atop a rocky hill in Kaleköy (ancient Simena) near Kekova in Antalya Province, Turkey, is a Byzantine fortress built in the Middle Ages by the Knights of Rhodes on earlier Lycian foundations from the 4th century BC to defend against pirates.
It houses Lycia's smallest ancient theater, carved into rock with 300 seats, plus rock tombs, cisterns, and a necropolis of distinctive Lycian sarcophagi, some partially submerged nearby due to earthquakes. Accessible only by boat or foot, the site offers stunning Mediterranean views over sunken ruins, blending Hellenistic, Roman, and Crusader layers in a car-free village setting.
