Sinop Castle is a massive ancient fortress enclosing the peninsula and isthmus of Sinop on Turkey's Black Sea coast, originating in the 8th century BC by Milesian colonists.
Expanded by Pontic King Mithridates IV in the 2nd century BC, it features 2,000 meters of walls up to 25 meters high and 8 meters thick with 43 towers blending Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman styles, including an inner castle built in 1214 that served as a notorious prison until 1997.
Recently restored and on UNESCO's tentative list, it offers panoramic harbor views amid layered defenses that withstood sieges across millennia.
