Sokograd Fortress
Sokolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sokograd Fortress near Sokolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a medieval fortress with origins dating back to the Middle Ages, first mentioned in historical documents from 1395.
It was an important defensive stronghold during the dynastic struggles of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and later witnessed multiple battles as the Ottoman Empire expanded into the region, falling to Ottoman rule along with nearby Bihać in 1592. The fortress was built on a rocky, inaccessible hill and consisted of an upper and lower town; the upper town sat on a rocky cliff with several towers, including a tall rectangular main tower surrounded by a deep moat, and had thick, lime mortar walls made of cut rubble, many of which have endured over time.
The fortress had features like a water cistern inside the fort, connected by rainwater pipes, and diverse defensive structures including cannon openings. Named after falconers who trained falcons to pay duties, Sokograd was strategically significant until it lost its military importance in the early 19th century, after which it was abandoned and fell into ruin. Today, the site retains ruins that speak to its historical military role and offers scenic views of the surrounding landscape.
