Stockalperschloss
Brig, Switzerland, Switzerland
Stockalperschloss, or Stockalper Palace, is Switzerland's largest secular Baroque building, located in Brig in the canton of Valais.
Constructed between 1658 and 1678 by the wealthy silk merchant and magnate Kaspar Stockalper von Thurm, who amassed a fortune through monopolies on salt, trade over the Simplon Pass, mining, and mercenaries, it features three massive granite towers, an arcaded courtyard, and opulent interiors symbolizing his power as the "King of Simplon."
Exiled in 1679 due to envy from rivals who seized his assets, Stockalper returned impoverished to die there; the canton acquired it in 1948, transforming it into a museum with exhibitions on Simplon history, guided tours of historic halls, and cultural events as a nationally significant heritage site.
