Trachselwald Castle
Trachselwald, Switzerland, Switzerland
Trachselwald Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress crowning a hill in the village of Trachselwald in Switzerland's canton of Bern.
Dating back to the 11th or 12th century with its oldest tuff stone keep from around 1250, it served as the seat of local barons before passing to Bern in the 14th century, functioning as a sheriff's residence, prison, and administrative center.
Expanded with a palas, chapel, and Baroque gatehouse over centuries, it notably held peasant leader Niklaus Leuenberger during the 1653 Swiss Peasant War and Mennonites facing persecution, now operating as a museum highlighting regional history and Anabaptist heritage as a site of national significance.
