Vordere Wartenberg Ruine
Muttenz, Switzerland, Switzerland
Vordere Wartenberg Ruine is the largest and most significant of three medieval castle ruins atop Wartenberg hill near Muttenz in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, with evidence of prehistoric use dating back to the Bronze Age around 1800-800 BC.
Built in the mid-12th century, likely by the Counts of Frohburg or Burgundians, it served as a key early noble fortress outside Basel's gates, featuring a bergfried tower, cistern, fortified walls, and a neck ditch, later owned by families like zer Sunnen and Habsburg-Laufenburg before acquisition by Basel in 1515.
Part of a defensive cluster with Mittel- and Hintere Wartenberg ruins, it offers hikers panoramic views and insights into over a millennium of regional fortifications.
