Wartegg Castle
Rorschacherberg, Switzerland, Switzerland
Wartegg Castle is a Renaissance-era chateau in Rorschacherberg, Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Constance, built in 1557 by Kaspar Blarer von Wartensee, a bailiff serving the Diocese of Constance, on the site of an earlier estate as the family seat near their ancestral Schloss Wartensee.
It changed hands through noble families like Zwyer von Evibach, von Thurn und Valsassina, and Bourbon-Parma, serving as a refuge for exiles including French nobles during the 1789 Revolution and Austria's last Empress Zita in 1919, with expansions like a west wing for diplomacy and an English landscape park added in the 19th century.
After decay post-1950s, the Mijnssen family restored it in 1994 into a sustainable hotel with organic dining, preserving its historic turquoise bath, cultural events, and 13-hectare park as a Swiss heritage site blending aristocratic legacy with modern hospitality.
