Wartenberg - Hintere Ruine
Muttenz, Switzerland, Switzerland
Wartenberg - Hintere Ruine is the smallest and northernmost of three medieval castle ruins on Wartenberg hill near Muttenz in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, likely constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century by the Homberg family.
First documented in 1306 when sold to the Habsburg-Laufenburg counts, it later passed through noble hands including the Eptingen-Madeln and Sevogel families before abandonment by the 15th century.
Featuring a central bergfried tower, fortified walls, and a cistern, the idyllically situated site offers hikers panoramic views alongside its larger Vordere and Mittlere Wartenberg counterparts, all tied to over a millennium of prehistoric and feudal history.
