Wartenberg - Mittlere Ruine
Muttenz, Switzerland, Switzerland
Wartenberg - Mittlere Ruine is the middle castle ruin among three medieval fortifications on Wartenberg hill near Muttenz in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, built in the late 12th century likely by the Homberg family.
First documented in 1301 alongside the larger Vordere Wartenberg when acquired by the wealthy Basel zer Sunnen family, it later passed to their relatives the Münch of Münchenstein before the city of Basel purchased both in 1515 amid their decay.
The well-preserved site features a bergfried tower base, cistern remnants, fortified walls, and an inner tower, offering hikers insights into early noble defenses outside Basel's gates with ties to over a thousand years of prehistoric and feudal activity.
