Wittigkofen Castle
Bern, Switzerland, Switzerland
Wittigkofen Castle, located in Bern, Switzerland, originated as a medieval farm residence granted as a fief by the Zähringer family to their followers in the 13th century.
Managed initially by Heinricus de Wittenchoven, a council member and documented feudal lord around the mid-1200s, it changed hands multiple times, including to a religious community in 1271 and later to Bernese patrician Beat Ludwig von Mülinen in 1570, who expanded it before a fire damaged parts in 1580.
Looted by French troops during their 1798 invasion, when it briefly served as a headquarters for Ancien Régime defenders, the castle endures as a cultural heritage site of national importance, mentioned in works by local author Rudolf von Tavel.
