Originally held by noble families like the Freiherr von Worvo around 1127 and later the von Kien, it passed through various owners including the von Diesbach and von Graffenried families, who renovated it in 1469 and 1594 amid fires and expansions like a Baroque wing.
Recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, it overlooks the town after centuries as a local lordship seat until sold in 1792.
