Yılankale
Turkey, Turkey
Yılankale, known as Snake Castle, is a late 12th- to 13th-century Armenian fortress in Turkey's Adana Province near the Ceyhan River, possibly built by King Leo I of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia to guard strategic routes like the Silk Road.
Featuring rusticated masonry, horseshoe towers, vaulted chambers, and three baileys adapted to a rocky hill, it includes a preserved Armenian chapel and a debated relief of a king with lions, likely Het'um I or II.
Abandoned by the mid-14th century under the Ramadanids, it's tied to Shahmaran legends of a half-woman, half-snake mythical figure and was renovated in 2014 as one of Cilicia's best-preserved castles open to visitors.
