Verified Yapahuwa Rock Fortress

Kurunegala District, North Western Province, Sri Lanka

Yapahuwa Rock Fortress is a striking medieval rock‑top fortress in the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka’s North Western Province, originally built as a fortified capital in the late 13th century.

It served as the capital of Sri Lanka under King Bhuvenekabahu I for about eleven years, from around 1273 to 1284, and once housed the country’s sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha to protect it from South Indian invasions. The site is centred on a steep granite outcrop enclosed by outer and inner ramparts with moats, and accessed by a long, beautifully carved stone staircase guarded by lion statues at its upper end.

On top of the rock and around its lower terraces are ruins of a palace, Buddhist temples, and religious structures, reflecting both military strength and religious devotion of the period. Today Yapahuwa is a quieter, lesser‑known heritage spot compared with places like Sigiriya, offering visitors a mix of history, detailed stone carvings, and sweeping views over the dry‑zone countryside.
