Yeni-Kale Fortress
Kerch, Ukraine
Yeni-Kale Fortress in Kerch, Ukraine, is a late 17th-early 18th century Ottoman stronghold built between 1699 and 1706 on the Kerch Strait's shore to control maritime access amid Russo-Turkish rivalries, designed as an irregular pentagon with five bastions, thick walls, cannon emplacements, a mosque, arsenal, and underground aqueduct for water supply.
Constructed under Italian engineer Goloppo with French assistance on ancient Greek Myrmekion site, it housed 800 Turkish soldiers plus Crimean Tatars, serving strategic and residential roles until Russian forces captured it in 1771 during the 1768-1774 war, later repurposed as a hospital before abandonment.
Today the evocative ruins, including gates and coastal bastions, draw tourists for panoramic Kerch views and layered history from Ottoman defenses to Crimean trade hub, preserved as a cultural monument despite erosion.
