Zviahel Castle
Novohrad-Volynskyi, Ukraine
Zviahel Castle, located in Novohrad-Volynskyi (formerly Zviahel), Ukraine, along the Sluch River, originated in the early 16th century when Prince Konstanty Ostrogski constructed a stone fortress with defensive walls and three towers—two brick and one unfinished wooden on a stone base—to protect against invasions.
Destroyed during the 1648 Ukrainian Cossack uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, its ruins feature preserved wall fragments and a reconstructed defense tower, now a popular monument drawing tourists for rock climbing, kayaking, and views of the river's rocky shores. Partially restored as part of the city's fortification heritage, the site reflects Volhynia's medieval defensive architecture and hosts extreme tourism amid ancient trees and scenic landscapes.
