Zolochiv Castle
Zolochiv, Ukraine
Zolochiv Castle in Zolochiv, Ukraine, is a 17th-century Renaissance fortress built in 1634–1636 by Jakub Sobieski, father of King John III Sobieski, using enslaved Crimean Tatar labor, featuring a rectangular bastioned layout with four pentagonal corner towers, high ramparts, a moat, and the "Grand Palace" in Dutch style.
Later enhanced with the exotic "Chinese Palace"—a small mauve rotunda gifted by John III to his French wife Marie Casimire—it withstood Ottoman sieges in 1672 and 1675, served as a royal residence with advanced features like heating and sewers, and changed hands among noble families before becoming a prison under Austrian, Soviet, and Nazi rule.
Revived in the 1970s by art historian Borys Voznytsky as part of Lviv Art Gallery, the complex now houses museums of Eastern cultures and noble artifacts, preserving Ukraine's layered history amid scenic Lviv Oblast landscapes.
