Zwing Uri Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Zwing Uri is a ruined medieval fortress perched near Amsteg in the canton of Uri, Switzerland. It is recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance and is historically notable for its role in early Swiss historiography as the first fortress destroyed in the Burgenbruch, the foundational break with feudal lordship that preceded the Swiss Confederacy.
The site sits on a long-abandoned defensive complex; archaeological work shows it evolved from a Bronze Age occupation to a 12th–13th century wooden tower, with a planned expansion into a full castle that was never completed and abandoned around 1320.
After centuries of ruin, the site was partially repurposed in the 19th century when a restaurant used stones from the ruin, and it has since been stabilized and studied through archaeological excavations, preserving its significance for understanding early Swiss confederation history.
