Arboretum Trompenburg
Rotterdam, Netherlands, Netherlands
Arboretum Trompenburg is a beautiful botanical garden and arboretum located on the edge of Rotterdam's city center in the Kralingen district of the Netherlands, spanning 7 to 8 hectares at 4 meters below sea level with a canal system for drainage. The garden dates back to the 19th century and was originally landscaped as an English country garden on what was once a family-owned estate where Dutch admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp lived in the 17th century; it has been open to the public daily since 1958 for a small admission fee. Trompenburg houses an extensive collection of more than 4,000 different types of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, tubers, and aquatic plants, including national plant collections of conifers, oak (Quercus), beech (Fagus), rhododendron, Ligustrum, Rodgersia, and Hosta, with its 750-variety Hosta collection and rhododendrons being particularly special. The garden features traditional English-style gardens, rose gardens, a heather garden, a goldfish pond, an aviary, a desert greenhouse filled with cacti and succulents, a nursery, and a visitor information center, and it is currently developing a modern food forest while maintaining its role as a registered museum important for biodiversity and natural heritage.
