Slot Moermond
Renesse, Netherlands, Netherlands
Slot Moermond is a historic water castle in Renesse on Schouwen-Duiveland island, Zeeland province, Netherlands, surrounded by a 45-hectare nature reserve and moat. The first round castle was built between 1230-1244 by Costijn van Zierikzee after receiving lands from Count Floris IV, featuring a central donjon and polygonal ring wall; it was destroyed in 1297 during conflicts between Jan van Renesse and Wolfert van Borssele. Rebuilt around 1339 by Arend van Haamstede and again in 1513 by Jacob van Serooskerke using the old gatehouse as a residence, it was expanded in 1612 by Iman van Zuidland with a stair tower and east wing, later restored in 1955 to its original state. Today, it hosts private events like weddings while the estate preserves medieval remnants amid dunes.
