Kasteel Sabbinge
Wolphaartsdijk, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel Sabbinge, also known as Hooge Huijs or Huis te Sabbinge, is a small restored medieval castle in the hamlet of Oud-Sabbinge, Wolphaartsdijk municipality, Zeeland province, Netherlands, on the former island of Wolphaartsdijk between Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland. Built around 1250, likely by Wolfert van Borssele as the residence of the lords of Sabbinge, it was destroyed in 1321 during local conflicts but rebuilt soon after, serving as a key lordship seat until 1457 when an heiress married Laurens van Cats, leading to its conversion into a farm as the family shifted focus. Damaged by floods like the 1334 Saint Clemensvloed, it fell into ruin over centuries with attached barns shown on 19th-century maps, until a major 1962 restoration by architects de Lussanet de la Sablonière and Heringa transformed it into a private residence amid the area's polder history.
