Kasteel Westhove
Oostkapelle, Netherlands, Netherlands
Kasteel Westhove is a medieval water castle located between Domburg and Oostkapelle on Walcheren island, Zeeland province, Netherlands, with origins dating to the early 13th century as a moated structure owned by the Middelburg Abbey and used as abbots' summer residence. It featured a main castle with two towers separated by a moat from a bailey with three entrances and round towers, later extended westward around 1560 before Spanish occupation during the 1572 Siege of Middelburg led Watergeuzen forces to storm and largely destroy it. Rebuilt post-destruction and adapted through the 18th-19th centuries—including as a children's sanatorium—it underwent major restorations in 1948 and 1977 after World War II damage, now operating as a hostel amid its historical park.
