Vredenburg
Westervoort, Netherlands, Netherlands
Vredenburg was a short-lived 16th-century fortress in Utrecht, Netherlands—not Westervoort—built by Habsburg Emperor Charles V starting in 1529 on the site of a former convent to control the city's rebellious population and defend against the Duke of Guelders. Featuring thick walls, moats, and towers designed for cannon defense under architects like Rombout II Keldermans, it housed a Spanish garrison that turned its guns on the city during the 1577 siege amid the Dutch Revolt. Demolished by angry locals led by the legendary Trijn van Leemput in 1577 after the Pacification of Ghent, its ruins filled the moat, creating today's Vredenburg square, with foundations uncovered in 1970s excavations.
